Post Jam Planned Plans

The 'A Game By It's Cover' jam deadline came and went. It left me in a strange position where I wanted to continue development on the project, but didn't really know how to move forward. This is partially due to not getting as much done for the jam as I'd hoped and trying to separate the things that are necessary or desirable for the game from what was hacked in for time reasons or done just because "that's the default way".

Speaking of the "default way", if you follow my instagram you may have seen the early prototypes where the player character was a spaceship with 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF) controls. There is nothing wrong with spaceship games and the reason it started that way, is that I was modelling one and experimenting with a 6DoF controller when I discovered the AGBIC jam. However after about a week of developing the procedural plant system I realised I just wasn't "into" the idea of flying around like that for this game (whatever "this" game meant at that time), I abandoned basically everything except the plant system itself.

So now, I have what I think is a fun movement system with a lot of potential. So much potential, I'm not entirely sure where to take it. I also don't want to get sucked into a project "by accident". That's basically what happened with Drawn In (name checks out). With that said, I do want to keep working on GoD:ARENA.

Some of the things I would like to add SOON:

  • More than a single resource.
  • Extra tricks with varied functionality.
  • Music reactive elements.

Stuff to be added anywhere between "soon" and "eventually":

  • More plant types.
  • Fruit.
  • Hub and level structure.
  • Pausing.
  • Score/Combo system.

For the moment, development is going to be focused on rounding out the movement and plant systems. Do feel free to post your thoughts on things you'd like to see added or changed though.
